About Freedom Clinic

I’m Dr Sue Kenneally, and I’m the resident doctor here at the clinic. I have years of experience working as a weight loss physician, caring for people who are living with excess weight that they want to lose, both in the NHS and privately. You can read more about my experience here. Essentially, I’m slightly obsessed with helping people to lose weight, and I never, ever get tired of hearing people’s stories about how their lives change as a result.

Dr Sue Kenneally
The Freedom Clinic

I’ve called this clinic Freedom, because this is what it represents to me. Every person who ever comes to see me as a patient is looking for freedom, either from something or to something. Freedom from worries about their long-term health, from aches and pains, from guilt and shame (let’s get rid of that right now, shall we? I’ll explain shortly) and not liking what they see in the mirror. Freedom to enjoy life, whatever that means to them – being as active as they want, running round with the kids/grandkids, increased confidence, saying yes to that opportunity/date/job offer, wearing the clothes they love and just having more energy. And for me personally it represents freedom, because I can work the way that I have always wanted to – supporting people to lose the weight that they need to, any way that I can.

The first thing I want you to understand about our values here is that your excess weight is not your fault. Most people gain weight throughout adult life, and this is mainly because of our environment and our society. We now know that there are about a hundred causes of weight gain here in the UK, and that almost all of them are beyond the conscious control of most people. So, I’ve said it countless times before, and I’ll say it again:

It’s not your fault.

Guilt, shame and judgement have absolutely no place in the Freedom Clinic. We understand how difficult managing your weight is. We get that you’ve ‘tried everything’ and it hasn’t worked. We know that having extra weight is all about hormones, and neurology, and all kinds of physiology that we don’t need to bore you with, but we understand it and we have created our service accordingly. And that’s what we want to support you with.

Yes, you can impact your weight by changing what you eat and how you move, and we encourage that, but there are good physiological reasons why this will only take you so far, and probably temporarily. If you’ve ever lost a ton of weight on a diet and then inexplicably regained it all? Guess what – that wasn’t you falling off the wagon, or failing in some catastrophic way. That was your physiology. Thinking it was doing a good thing. You can read more about that in our patient area.

So here at the Freedom Clinic of course we recommend that you look at your lifestyle, but ultimately we recommend weight loss medication for most people. There are some people who shouldn’t have this medication for medical reasons, and some who don’t need it, but for the majority of people it’s hugely beneficial, and often life changing.

We prescribe only weight loss medications that have been rigorously tested and approved here in the UK, and only when it’s safe and appropriate to do so.

A lot of people worry about buying weight loss medication online, so please be reassured – I’m recognised as an expert in the field, both nationally and internationally, and I only work with colleagues who are also experts and highly reputable. So, any advice I give you will be based on the best available evidence, and the medication I prescribe is provided to you by a fully regulated pharmacist who is personally recommended by one of the companies that makes it.

As a service, we are here for you. I’ve added as much content as I can to this website, and all of it free of charge, because I want it to be accessible to everyone. I’ve uploaded all of the best advice I know how to give, and all my top tips and tricks for weight loss, in the patient area which is free to access. I do ask you to complete a brief registration form, but there is no financial cost involved. I want you to have every chance of success, and I’m here to cheer for you and support you as much as I can.

If you’re ready to talk then please book an appointment. If you’re not sure? Contact us.

I look forward to seeing you by email or on screen very soon!
